A 656,000-pound shipment was prepped for transport off Interstate 20 at the Columbia County Scales awaiting a tactical route to Alabama on Tuesday night.

The 261-foot long, 19-foot wide and 14-foot tall rig configuration, carrying a machine press, should complete its journey during the early morning hours, according to transportation officials.

East Central and West Central Georgia traffic will be slow or even stopped at some points due to the excessive size of the shipment. Georgia State Patrol officers and other escorts with blue lights and marked cars will accompany the load to pace traffic, when so warranted by the traffic control.

Empty Stocking Fund raises more than $100,000

Nearly 3,700 families and individuals received assistance from the Empty Stocking Fund last year.

The seasonal charity begun by The Augusta Chronicle 86 years ago collected $101,660.46 in donations in 2016 to provide toys for children and certificates for food and clothing. About 990 families and 2,705 individuals were helped.

The community's generosity has remained consistent since The Chronicle began the effort in the early days of the Great Depression. Over the past decade Augustans have donated more than a million dollars to the effort.

The newspaper covers the costs of administering the fund, so all donations from individuals, organizations and businesses go directly to those who need them. Many parents and caregivers unable to provide for their children depend on the charity.

Columbia County Water Utility will be performing maintenance on the wastewater conveyance system in the highlighted area above using smoke blowers Feb 2-10.

Residents might notice smoke in their neighborhoods, and smoke might appear from the vent pipes on the roofs of houses.

If you have drains in your house that you do not use on a regular basis, residents might need to run some water in them for a minute to fill the trap and prevent the smoke from escaping the drain into the home.

The utility has notified the fire department of the activity. Anyone with questions should contact the Water Utility office at (706) 210-3104.

Goodwill will celebrate its mission of renewing lives through career services while showcasing the talents of Helms College culinary students at the fourth annual reNew&Brew on Friday.

Guests are invited to wear blue jeans and bow ties at the event, which will be held from 7-11 p.m. Friday at the Snelling Center, 3165 Washington Road at Furys Ferry Road, and in the adjacent culinary labs and classrooms of the Helms College School of Hospitality.

Proceeds support Helms College, the first nationally accredited, Title IV eligible, post-secondary institution in the world created by a Goodwill.

The "renewal" aspect of the event, celebrating Goodwill's mission of providing career services, will be illustrated with a silent auction of art created by local artists and designers, many of them using items purchased in a Goodwill retail training store as the basis for their works. The auction this year includes an original painting created for reNew & Brew by celebrated Augusta artist Judy Averett, and a spectacular Harry Jarman painting donated by Lisa and Tony Wagner.

In addition, guests will be treated to culinary works created by Helms College students and paired with a choice of samplings from 16 different beers. Guests will also receive a commemorative tasting glass.

Augusta's own River Watch Brewery will make its reNew & Brew tasting debut at the event, along with craft breweries from Athens, Atlanta, Woodstock and Marietta, Ga.; Asheville, N.C.; and Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.

In addition, reNew & Brew this year will for the first time feature a cidery: Bold Rock Cider Co., of Mills River, N.C.

Participating breweries are provided with the assistance of event sponsor A.B. Beverage Co.

Sponsorships and individual tickets are available at goodwillworks.org/renewandbrew, or by calling Kelly Tabor at (706) 650-5760.

For more information about reNew & Brew, or to arrange coverage of the event, contact Barry Paschal, senior director of Marketing and Communications, at (706) 726-1986 or bpaschal @goodwillworks.org.

A Columbia County middle school teacher is facing charges after a parent discovered Snapchat messages between him and a student.

Jon Mark Thornhill Jr., 34, was booked into the Columbia County detention center Sunday on a charge of failure to report suspected child abuse.

According to an incident report, a Grovetown mother contacted the sheriff's office Jan. 24 after finding messages between her 14-year-old daughter and Thornhill, her physical education teacher at Columbia Middle School. The mother told police her daughter was acting suspiciously so she took the phone and saw several Snapchat messages, one of which stated she had been sexually assaulted by her father in the past.

The report states that another message said the teen missed her teacher and his hugs.

Greenbrier sweeps Evans in regular season finale

The regular-season finale between Greenbrier and Evans meant little in the region standings. But try telling the two rivals the game didn't mean much.

In a sluggish offensive contest, Austin Canaday and Nick Murry combined for 25 points as the Wolfpack defeated the Knights, 45-34.

"Evans is always going to be Evans," Greenbrier coach Casey Heckathorn said. "That was an extremely important game for our seniors."

The Wolfpack (8-16) won their third game in a row and will enter next week's region tournament as a No. 4 seed. They will face Grovetown at 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner qualifying for the state tournament and advancing to play No. 1 seed Lakeside on Thursday.

"I think we're peaking at the right time," Heckathorn said. "I like the momentum going in. We know a lot about Grovetown. We've played two extremely close games with them."

Against Evans, Canaday led Greenbrier with 13 points, while Murry added 12. Richard Crawford scored eight, making just one field goal in the second half. But it was a big one.

Evans (8-16) pulled within five midway through the fourth quarter when Crawford was left all alone on the wing. He swished his second 3-pointer of the contest. Then, the Wolfpack added a layup to push the lead to 10.

Kyle Driscoll scored 12 points to lead Evans, while Cameron Cabbarus added 11. The Knights, a No. 3 seed, will face Alcovy at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner qualifying for the state tournament and advancing to play Heritage in the region semifinals.

"We'll work on it Monday and get ready for it Monday," Evans coach Kevin Kenny said about his team's shooting. "We just have to have better shot selection."

In the girls game, Greenbrier used a big fourth quarter to upend Evans, 48-43.

Sydney Grayden scored seven of her team-high 18 points in the final quarter, while Natalie Wilson added five of her 11 points down the stretch. The Lady Wolfpack outscored the Lady Knights, 20-12, in the final eight minutes.

Renee Smith swished three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Evans jumped out to a 17-9 advantage. But Greenbrier pulled within five at halftime and was down just three entering the fourth.

Lexius Jeffcoat led the Lady Knights with 10 points, while Smith and Kiyana Nelson each scored 9.

Grovetown softball standout signs with South Georgia State College

Peyton Peacock is taking a different route to get to the next level.

On Monday, the Grovetown softball standout signed with South Georgia State College, a two-year school. Peacock said that school is the first step in her collegiate career.

"After two years, the coach is going to try to get me to an even better college," Peacock said. "So that seemed like the best way to go."

A pitcher and third baseman, Peacock reaped the rewards of a successful season for the Lady Warriors. Grovetown went 15-14 and advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history. With her team and individual success, Peacock received an opportunity to sign a scholarship offer.

"This is something I've always wanted to do," she said. "I've always wanted to have a signing like everybody else. I'm just proud. I feel like I accomplished something."

Peacock began playing softball in second grade because of her friend, Sara Katherine Mitchell. The two played softball growing up in Burke County until Peacock eventually moved to Columbia County.

As a youth, Peacock also played basketball and tennis. In middle school, she started focusing on softball and began playing travel ball.

"It's something new all the time," Peacock said about the sport. "You're not just running up and down the court trying to get a ball in the hoop. Every play is different every time."

After helping lead Grovetown to the second round of the state tournament, Peacock began seeking colleges. In November, she attended a prospect camp at South Georgia State College and immediately received an offer.

"I didn't do very good at the camp," said Peacock, who emailed her stats beforehand to coach Nicki Levering. "She was still interested in me and she hasn't even seen my best yet."

South Georgia State College is a junior college in Douglas, Ga.

Peacock said she's planning to major in early childhood education, but she said she might change her mind. She in the future said she wants to either become a coach or a crime scene investigator.

"I think I'd have more fun being a gym teacher," she said. "It'd just fit me more."

Teen charged in sister’s murder denied bond

A 16-year-old authorities say fatally shot his sister eight times in their family's Martinez home was deemed a threat to the community and denied bond Friday, while family members expressed immediate concern for his mental health.

Sonny Kim appeared before Judge John Flythe in Columbia County Superior Court for a bond hearing, with his mother and stepfather in attendance. Kim is charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and aggravated assault in the Dec. 19 incident.

Flythe denied bond at the state's request on the grounds that Kim had admitted to police that he planned to kill his entire family before turning the gun on himself. Flythe said that that there was a potential for Kim to intimidate witnesses, since all the victims were family members who lived together. Investigators said Kim told them that the plan to kill his family at their Martinez home was impulsive, but could not state why he did it.

Prosecutors said Kim had two magazine clips prepared to use to shoot his family. According to police, Kim had a .45-caliber handgun that belonged to his stepfather. Kim emptied one magazine when he shot his sister, Ashley Kim, in the chest before he turned the gun on his stepfather and pulled the trigger twice, not realizing the magazine was empty, said prosecutors. Kim's stepfather was able to restrain him until police arrived.

The defense argued Friday that Kim's family was concerned that he was mentally deteriorating while he is being confined at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Augusta.

Through tears, Nicole Brazell told the court that she has noticed a "deterioration" in her son's verbal and cognitive abilities during the two jail visits she has made to him. Brazell said they are still awaiting Kim's test results from MRI and CAT scans. Brazell said she believes her son might be suffering from some sort of aneurysm or even brain cancer and asked that bond be granted to ensure he gets the help he needs.

Man found hiding under girl's bed
A man was warned not to return to a property after he was found hiding under a juvenile girl's bed.

Police responded to the 300 block of Barnsley Drive in Evans Wednesday to reports of an unruly child, according to the incident report.

A man told police Patrick Bennett Jr. was let into the residence by his juvenile granddaughter. After the two went up to the juvenile's bedroom, the man contacted the police.

Upon arrival, the juvenile told police that Bennett had left the residence. When asked about Bennett's vehicle parked outside, the juvenile claimed she didn't know what Bennett drove.

Police soon found Bennett hiding under the girl's bed.

Bennett told police the juvenile had contacted him on social media and told him she was 17 years old and that they had mutual friends, but did not have any type of relationship.

Bennett was given a warning for criminal trespass to document the incident on behalf of the juvenile's grandfather.

Athlete Spotlight: Ryan Jolly, Augusta Prep

$

For Ryan Jolly, this time of year is all about being organized.

The Augusta Prep junior basketball standout has a planner at school that helps him balance academics and athletics. He tries to get his homework finished before basketball practice. Then, he heads home where he'll study for another two, three hours.

"I try to stay organized as much as possible," he said.

Academics is a big thing for Jolly, who also grew up in a sports-minded family. He grew up playing baseball, basketball, football and lacrosse. In seventh grade, he began focusing solely on basketball.

"The teamwork I really liked," Jolly said about the sport. "The competitive atmosphere I like for sure."

Jolly attended Stallings Island Middle School. He transferred to Augusta Prep for high school, citing academics as the No. 1 reason.

"This school is known for its academics," he said. "Basketball is just kind of a side option."

For the 6-foot-3, 150-pound Jolly, basketball is more than just an option. He's making a name for himself on the court, averaging 21 points, five assists and four steals per game this season. Also, he reached the 1,000-point milestone in his prep career earlier this season.

His stellar play is a carryover from his AAU play - he is a member of the Georgia Bulls. He's been with them since middle school.

"All summer long, I'm training with my AAU team, going places and playing top players in the nation," he said. "It's a good competitive atmosphere. Coming back here, it transfers well."

Jolly is currently the 15th-ranked guard in Georgia among all public and private school basketball players. Augusta Prep coach Mike Guthrie said Jolly is the consummate basketball player.

"He does it all," Guthrie said. "He plays defense. He blocks shots. He scores. He steals the ball. He gets rebounds. He does everything you need a point guard to do."

Several colleges are showing Jolly interest. He said William & Mary is his favorite right now, adding he's undecided on a major - he likes math and science.

"Academics is the top thing I want," said Jolly, who carries a 3.5 GPA. "Basketball is going to be a factor, too. I like small class sizes like at Prep. It all factors in.

"I don't know exactly where I want to go yet. I still have a lot of time to talk to my parents and see what else happens.".

Jolly still has plenty left to do on the basketball court this season and next. He said he's hopeful Augusta Prep will win the region this year and at least advance to the second round of the state tournament.

"Hopefully, we can win a state championship," he said. "That's the ultimate goal."
